Summer’s Over…Back To School!

Ladies and Gents,

It was a blistering summer. Rose and beer was about all you could enjoy…

I had the opportunity to enjoy some lazy days as well; many that had nothing to do with wine. A few blind tastings, but a well needed respite from flash cards, compendiums, and maps. I believe I had one glass of vino at the London Olympics, and that was on the plane ride.

Last week, however, was both a holiday and work. 6 days in France, visiting producers in Champagne, Burgundy, and the Northern Rhone Valley. Work due to wine, holiday due to the weather and that it was just Nicole and I jetting around in an A4 (gotta love the rental car upgrade)…

But, summer is over, and it is back to school. Red wines are being thought of, bubbly is on peoples’ minds for the holidays, and harvest has begun. Good news is, California winemakers and grapegrowers are quite happy this year. A bumper crop with high quality rivaling 2007 and 1997 is expected. French vignerons are worried, due to hail, frost, and uneven ripening. They were given hope by the weather last week-beautiful sunny weather in the 70’s and 80’s that should continue and provide a great Indian summer for a relatively small crop. I think they will fare better than a few players on my fantasy football team…

The grapes I tasted off the vine were fantastic. Listen to today’s show, where we taste some of the highlights of the trip.

Here’s to fall!
